Wireless Communication Systems Group - Lab Equipment and Network


The Bologna IEIIT unit hosts a complete telemeasurement workbench, as well as the network infrastucture, which benefits highly from the partnership with CNIT, the School of Engineering and RER (Regione Emilia Romagna). The joint use of the following technologies are supported:
  • CNIT ground network (currently under revision: a 2Mbps nodes in Bologna and two 512 Kbps nodes with Multicast support and IPv6); satellite network (2 Mbitps; band Ka transmission system; Skyplex technology; Space Operator Partner Eutelsat; HotBird6 satellite)
  • GARR network by means of the University of Bologna
  • European GEANT network by means of NEWCOM, the Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunications
  • broadband network of Emilia Romagna region, Italy

The telemeasurement workbench includes: signal generators (up to 50GHz), spectrum analysers (up to 40GHz), digital oscilloscopes (up to 2Gsa/s), multipath fading generators, digital transmission analysers, noise and interference generators, stream cipher-based noise analysers, network analysers, DSP modules and multi-DSP prototypes. Instrumentation is connected through an IEEE488 bus and, as well as circuits, it can be configurated remotely on the hybrid network. In consequence, when telemeasurements are needed, the user does not need to have any kind of instrumentation, since he can simply control those in the labs.
The satellitare network connects many Italian research groups; furthermore, not only is it a precious infrastructure for advanced studies in Telecommunications, but also the core of system for broadband services release.
Competence and cooperation among IEIIT (Bologna section) and CNIT Bologna and Genova units gave birth to LABNET (National Laboratory of Multimedia Communications), a further CNIT unit in Napoli. Testing could be started on the first prototypes adhering to the IEEE 802.11 standard. Applied research on this subject has been based on electromagnetic field forecasting by means of ray tracing; huge quantities of data are constantly collected and analysed in order to verify such previsions and provide indications about the expected QoS. Experimental activity at WiLab is still on the cutting edge and it is currently addressed to the latest WLAN/WiMAX technologies.
The first floor and underlying lecture halls of IEIIT building were first taken into account and properly equipped; afterwards, the telecommunications area in the old Faculty and the new DEIS building underwent a field testing themselves.
